“Sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.”
Alexis Morales
CMA
Medical Assistant
Alexis Morales is a Certified Medical Assistant at the Roper St. Francis Health Services Center, where she works alongside the clinic’s providers to support patients throughout their care. As one of the Center’s bilingual clinical team members, Alexis also plays an important role in supporting Spanish-speaking patients by helping bridge language barriers and ensuring they feel heard, understood, and comfortable participating in their care.
Alexis first came to the Health Services Center as a medical assisting student completing her externship. Initially, she was hesitant because she wasn’t quite sure what to expect from working in infectious disease. However, what began as an unfamiliar experience quickly grew into something much more meaningful. After completing her externship, Alexis joined the team and has now been with the Center for three years. What was once an unfamiliar environment has become what she proudly considers her “home away from home,” and her experiences with both patients and coworkers have helped shape the healthcare professional she is today.
What Alexis enjoys most about her work is the opportunity to build meaningful connections with her patients and be a safe, supportive presence throughout their care. She recognizes that navigating an infectious disease diagnosis can be overwhelming, and she believes that sometimes simply having someone who listens, shows compassion, and makes you feel like you matter can make all the difference. One of the most rewarding parts of her role is watching patients progress over time and having the opportunity to be a part of their journey.
Alexis’s passion for supporting Spanish-speaking patients is deeply personal. Growing up, she often helped translate for her grandmother while she navigated her own health concerns. Those experiences gave Alexis an early understanding of how overwhelming healthcare can feel when a language barrier makes it difficult to fully understand what is happening or communicate your needs. Today, she is proud to use her bilingual skills to help Spanish-speaking patients feel more comfortable, informed, and confident in their care.
Alexis began her healthcare education at Southeastern College, where she completed the Medical Assisting program and earned her credentials as a Certified Medical Assistant. She is now continuing her education at Trident Technical College, where she is pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). As she works toward becoming a registered nurse, Alexis hopes to build upon the experience and relationships she has gained as a medical assistant while continuing to provide compassionate, patient-centered care.
A Charleston native, Alexis enjoys traveling, shopping, working out, watching her favorite shows, and seeking out new experiences outside of work and school. She especially loves traveling and exploring new places and enjoys opportunities that allow her to step outside of her comfort zone and experience something new.
A piece of advice she carries with her is, “You don’t have to have everything figured out to keep moving forward.”
